Kidsreach Communique - 16 March 2009

Welcome to the Kidsreach email Communique sent to you by David Goodwin and the team at Kidsreach

I am writing this on my way to Sri Lanka . Please pray for this most important ten days where we pray, plan and prepare. More details below.

This week we feature a quote about how to reach boys and tell you about how you can be a part of the largest prayer meeting in the world. We also introduce to you our latest Discovery Club curriculum subject.

We pray you have a wonderful week.

WORLDWIDE WEEKEND OF PRAYER FOR CHILDREN AT RISK. -need to organise now!

On the first Saturday in June every year, upwards of 4 million people around the world join in the largest prayer meeting of its kind, to pray for children at risk around the world. There are so many children who live in abusive and tragic circumstances. Most will not get a chance to hear the Gospel.

On behalf of the hurting children of the world, I beg you to organise a prayer meeting in your location to pray for children at risk. It doesn't matter if it is 2 people or 20 or 200. You will still be part of the largest prayer meeting in the world. You can register your meeting and download resources from http://www.viva.org/?page_id=94

Discovery Club Curriculum #34: REACH

Helping Children Reach the World

Try to shine as lights among the people of the world, as you hold firm to the message that brings life.  Phil 2:15b-16

In this very exciting subject we encourage the children to be lights to the world, to REACH out to their friends, be involved in missions and ministry, using all the talents and abilities that God has given them.

There are also some very moving moments where God can touch children and bring healing to areas of their life that need to be touched before they can reach out to others and to be the light of the world.

Cost $35.00. Order by replying to this email, or via the website.

Sri Lanka Update

Kidsreach has been involved in Sri Lanka since 1991. Sri Lanka is a country that has experienced a lot of turmoil in the last 20 years and in some parts is very strongly anti-Christian. However, Sri Lanka is also strategically located with easy access to many other countries. Already our team from Sri Lanka have ministered in India , Nepal and Pakistan . I believe Kidsreach Sri Lanka will in the future reach out to many nations in that region.

For more information on our work in Sri Lanka , go to http://www.kidsreach.org.au/index_files/missions.htm

David will be in Sri Lanka 16-25 March. The purpose of the trip is:

  1. 5 Day Course on Pastoral Care of Children
  2. Strategic meeting for 70 church leaders on Children's Ministry
  3. Team building and planning with Kidsreach team.

Please pray for safety in these precarious times. We still desperately need $2500 for this trip. If you would like to make a donation, please reply to this email. Australia and NZ residents can make a tax deductible donation.

If you are interested in being part of the 2009 missions team travelling to Sri Lanka and Nepal , please register your interest by replying to this email. The trip will take place 15 -29 August Sri Lanka, 29 August to 6 September in Nepal .

Victoria Fires Update

Last Sunday I held a training meeting for chaplains, teachers, pastors and kids workers who are working right in amongst the kids affected by the fires. Each one had incredible stories to tell. One pastor told me he was talking to one boy who lost seven of his mates.

It was great to be able to present them with the interactive booklet we printed especially for the children affected by these fires. The book is designed to help children through the crisis time and start their grieving process.

We have had three sponsors and donors to help produce this resource but still need $1500 more. It is also possible that we need more books printed in the near future. They are going to school chaplains and others who are working with the worst affected children.

If you can help, please let us know.

If you are in the affected areas, and haven't been in touch with us yet and need some help, please also contact us.

Quotable Quote

Boys, God and the Church, How Churches Can Help Boys Grow in Faith…and Why They Do Not!

This week we quote from a booklet written by Nick Harding and published by Grove Books Ltd. It is a very timely topic. There is no doubt that when boys do make it to adult faith it is often the exception rather than the rule.

Note, I have a copy of this 27 page booklet on my computer and am happy to forward it to anyone who asks.

Boys growing up within the church usually need help to ‘own' faith for themselves rather than relying on the faith of parents or leaders. For some, this happens at Confirmation, whilst others ‘make a commitment' either on one particular day or over a period of time. Leaders can help boys in a number of ways.

  • By being honest about how they discovered the reality of Christ personally. Boys will relate to stories about how men they respect came to faith.
  • By building opportunities into the programme for boys to respond through prayer and activity to what God may be teaching them. Do not force the issue, but allow opportunities to talk about long-term commitment to Christ based on their understanding at that time.
  • By emphasizing the ‘macho' elements of belief. Help boys see that to be a developing Christian may mean having to fight the world, stand against friends, do things regarded as different and strange, valuing and respecting people, and so on. Boys need to know that being a Christian is a hard rather than soft option.
