Welcome to the Kidsreach email
Communique sent to you by David Goodwin and the team at Kidsreach
I am writing this from Townsville where I am for the second of our School of Children 's Counselling courses for 2009. If you are in NSW, then please note there are only a few weeks left before the NSW course in April.
This week our feature quote is from Tim Kimmel's book: Why Christian Kids Rebel: Trading Heartache For Hope. In it he writes primarily for parents but the book has a lot to say to the church at large. His challenge in the book is that the Christian subculture we have chosen to raise our children in, might precondition them to spiritual apathy or antagonism. He says We need to be willing to slip fast the veneer of our Christian lifestyle and take a hard look at the heart of our faith. This may require us to question the status quo, but it might also pump some fresh air into our approach to raising our kids.
God Bless.
Easter Buns: Object Lesson
Easter is not far away. Here is an object lesson I have used a few times. It can also be used as part of an Easter sermon. You can add to the effect by serving Hot Cross buns for morning tea.
In 1361, a monk named Father Thomas Rocliffe at St. Albans Abbey, made small, spicy cakes stamped with the sign of the cross to be given to the poor.
Ever since then, Hot Cross Buns have been a very special Easter symbol. Here is what they mean:
- The bread reminds us of Jesus' last meal with his disciples and how they broke bread together.
- The raisins are dried grapes and can be a reminder of the cup of wine Jesus and his disciples shared.
- The cross on top is a reminder of Jesus' death on a cross and a symbol of God's love for and desire for justice among all people.
- The spices used in the dough recall the spices the women brought to the tomb with which they planned to anoint Jesus' body.
- The buns are round and remind us of the stone that was rolled away from the tomb.
The Easter Bag: An Object Lesson for Easter
This cloth bags looks magical to the children and adults who watch you do it. It unfolds as you tell the story to reveal five different colours - purple, black, red, white and yellow. All tell a different part of the Easter story. Purple the royalty of Christ, Black: the dark night when Jesus was betrayed, arrested, and put on trial; Red: his death; White: our receiving him; Gold: his resurrection. Full instructions on how to use it are included and the good news is that is still costs only $12. Once you have bought it, you will have it for life and be able to use it over and over again.

Quotable Quote
From Tim Kimmel T. (2004). Why Christian Kids Rebel: Trading Heartache For Hope. Nashville, Tennessee, W Publishing Group
“When our kids don't see genuine passion in us or in our spiritual activities, that lack of passion invalidates everything they are being taught about the true heart of a champion for Christ.”
