Kidsreach Communique - 20 April 2009

Welcome to the Kidsreach email Communique sent to you by David Goodwin and the team at Kidsreach

Sorry if you either received you Communique late last week, or if you received more than one copy. We unfortunately had problems with our server – and still do. We will no doubt have it sorted in a week or two.

For the past week, Therese and I have been on holiday visiting her family in Nelson.

You will note that we have added our prayer calender to the list of downloads available on the right hand column. We would value your prayers. Our passion is for the children of the world and I would love to hear from you if you can make a commitment to pray for our ministry. We will update this every month.

You will love the quote we have for you this week: Ducks Quack – Eagles Fly. Very thought-provoking.

God Bless.

A Really Fun Icebreaker: Shaving Balloons

You will need: balloons - at least one for each ‘volunteer', shaving cream and a razor. Do not use young children for this activity, in fact leaders are best.

Cover the balloons in shaving cream, and have each guest sit in a chair with a razor and a balloon. Have them shave the balloons. Whoever does it first without popping the balloon wins.

You will need a sheet on the floor as this makes a mess.

To make it even better, you may want to select an extra element for the ‘leaders' balloons. Fill their balloons with shaving foam, so when they pop , they get covered in shaving cream .

Possible Application : In church, we sometimes have to do things that are difficult and sometimes we see people make a mess of things. But church is church and it must always be a safe place to be. So if you see someone messing up or making a mistake, be kind and loving, not harsh. That way we show how committed we are to each other.

Follow-Up with Foxy Discipleship Cards

(Ideal for after Easter)

It is hard to think of a perfect follow up system for children that can help them on the way to discipleship. We think we have found the answer by using cards that children love to collect. They are printed on permanent plastic that not even putting through the wash will destroy! There are twelve cards that can be given out one at a time, week by week. On the other hand, if you are not likely to be in regular contact, they can be given to the children as a whole set and there is enough information laid out in a simple way, to begin their Christian journey. They are very reasonably priced and big discounts are offered for bulk purchases.

  • One set of cards - $3.00
  • Ten sets of cards - $25.00
  • Thirty sets of Cards - $65.00
  • Kit that includes a Foxy Puppet and scripts to go with the message that is on the cards, and ten sets of cards: $70.00

Please note, if you are planning an outreach and want multiple numbers of card one, please enquire by email.

Quotable Quote

DUCKS QUACK, EAGLES FLY

This week's challenging quote comes from Harvey Mackay, author of the New York Times #1 bestseller "Swim With The Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive."

Harvey Mackay was waiting in line for a taxi at the airport. When a cab pulled up, the first thing Harvey noticed was that the taxi was polished to a bright shine. Smartly dressed in a white shirt, black tie and freshly pressed black slacks, Wally the cab driver jumped out and rounded the car to open the back door. Harvey noticed that the inside of the cab matched the outside — spotlessly clean.

As Wally slid behind the wheel, he said, "Would you like a cup of coffee? I have a thermos of regular and one of decaf."

Jokingly, Harvey said, "No, I'd prefer a soft drink."

Wally smiled and said, "No problem. I have a cooler up front with regular and Diet Coke, water and orange juice."

Almost stuttering, Harvey said, "I'll take a Diet Coke."

Handing Harvey his drink, Wally said, "If you'd like something to read, I have The Wall Street Journal, Time, Sports Illustrated and USA Today."

As the taxi pulled away from the curb, Wally handed Harvey a laminated card and said, "These are the stations I get and the music they play if you'd like to listen to the radio." As if that weren't enough, Wally told Harvey the air conditioning was on and asked if the temperature was comfortable.

The driver then advised Harvey of the best route to his destination for that time of day. Wally also let Harvey know that he'd be happy to chat and tell him about some of the sights or, if Harvey preferred, to leave him with his own thoughts.

"Tell me, Wally," the amazed passenger asked, "have you always served customers like this?"

Wally smiled and looked in the rear view mirror. "No, not always. In fact, it's only been in the last two years. My first five years driving, I spent most of my time complaining like all the rest of the cabbies do. Then I heard the personal growth guru Wayne Dyer on the radio saying that if you get up in the morning expecting to have a bad day, you'll rarely disappoint yourself. He said, ‘Stop complaining. Differentiate yourself from your competition. Don't be a duck. Be an eagle. Ducks quack and complain. Eagles soar above the crowd."

"So I decided to change my attitude and become an eagle. I looked at the other cabs and their drivers. The cabs were dirty, the drivers unfriendly and the customers were unhappy. So I decided to make some changes. I put in a few at a time. When my customers responded well, I did more."

"I take it that has paid off for you," Harvey said.

"It sure has," Wally replied. "My first year as an eagle, I doubled my income from the previous year. This year, I'll probably quadruple it."

Wally the cab driver made a different choice. He decided to stop quacking like a duck and to start soaring like an eagle.
